I actually don't think I ever finished either SR3 or SR4 because I kept getting distracted by side missions and just screwing around and playing dress-up and customizing cars and all the other random stuff you can do in addition to the main story. I played the first few missions in Remastered yesterday (free forever on Epic game store) and it was really fun coming back to the game after a few years. Yeah SR3 was my first Saint's game and I was literally cackling at just how over the top the opening was, and it perfectly set the tone for the game. That opening mission/sequence in 3 did an incredible job of setting the tone and the stakes of the rest of the game. I never played SR1 or 2, but most of the GTA games and other open world stuff. But hey, they're also celebrities and they'd still like to get autographs. The police sound just so very *tired* during the first mission where they know they'll lose like, a hundred cops trying to stop the Saints latest rampage. When I try to pitch friends on SR3, I mention that the game starts with the type of mission that most games end on. I found it very refreshing, not to mention a ton of fun to actually play.

SR3 recognizes the gap between the story and gameplay, and rather than trying to drag the gameplay into the same po-faced place as the story, it cheerfully shrugs and decisively moves the story into the same over-the-top box as the gameplay. They can have a story of betrayal and spiraling into a place of personal darkness, and then the cutscene ends and you punch an old lady off a scooter, do a sweet 420 double ollie with cheese off a moving truck, and then massacre 300 civilians with few ramifications. It's practically the definition of ludo-narrative dissonance.

Here's what I really appreciated about SR3: the GTA series tries very hard to do some dark and mature storytelling, but no matter how good the story ends up being, the actual things you do in the game do not line up with a mature tone - or even, just, with reality. Given where the F&F franchise has gone, at this point it looks like they're cribbing notes from Saints Row so this cross pollination is perfect. And given how goofy F&F can get, it's a good one. The devs have said they're hoping to keep the tone less cynical with the reboot and specifically cited the Fast and Furious franchise as an inspiration. The writers have pretty much said that 2 went to some dark places and they needed to create something more fun and less mean-spirited after that. It's silly but with a visible sequence of events behind it.Дў to 3 have the Saints go from a pretty vicious gang to a parody of the fame some rappers with criminal connections had and then some. 4 At least has a sequence of events early on with the Saints being hired as contractors to stop a terrorist plot and ending up as heroes before the Boss decides to get into politics. The biggest jump narratively was 2 to 3 IMO. But I hope you can forgive me if I'm a bit. I'm sure there's a logical narrative line of progression here. Fast forward to IV, and the trailer for that is 'You're the President of the United States when suddenly aliens attack.

I never really paid much attention since, outside a glance at whatever current big budget trailer happens to show up. It's not like GTA takes itself that seriously, but if you want to qualify that as the baseline for 'serious', then I don't think Saint's Row skewed too different from it. All I can say though is I don't feel like it was crazy zany. honestly don't even remember Saint's Row 1, other than I know I finished it.
